Ecosia
🇩🇪Berlin-based consumer web search engine (uses Bing/Google index, building own index) that donates ad profits to tree-planting.
Ecosia GmbH is a consumer web search engine headquartered in Berlin, Germany. It is best known for using the bulk of its search-ad revenue to fund tree-planting and other climate projects worldwide, rather than for a distinctive proprietary index.
Since 2018 Ecosia has operated under a “steward-ownership” structure in which voting shares are held by a foundation, preventing the company from being sold or paying out profits to private shareholders. Search results are currently sourced from a mix of Microsoft Bing, Google, and an emerging in-house index.
In late 2024 Ecosia formed a joint venture with fellow French search engine Qwant, aimed at building an independent, Europe-based search index.
