Mistral AI is a French artificial intelligence company headquartered in Paris. Founded in 2023 by former Meta and Google DeepMind researchers, it develops LLMs under both open-weight and commercial licenses.

The company offers La Plateforme, an API for its models, and Le Chat, a consumer-facing chat assistant. Its open-weight models are widely used by developers who want to self-host or fine-tune an LLM.

Mistral has raised large funding rounds including from French state-linked investors, making it Europe’s most prominent independent foundation-model company and a frequent reference in EU AI-sovereignty policy discussions.
